Sensor Reading: Gamma Athenides IV

REPORT EXCEPT:

Gamma Athenides IV, also known as "Athenides" is a class-M planet uninhabited by intelligent life within Federation space. It is located in Sector 312, Grid 14 x 23 x 08. The Federation has recently assigned it to be a new colony world, and we have been working with other starships to assist in the first phase of infrastructure construction.

The colony will be located on the equatorial Western shore of the Eerazay supercontinent.

Most features on the planet were named by the Dr. Okatoro Keinnt of Denobula, the first scientist to do a full-scale survey of the planet. While he named his favorite island chain after himself, he named the volcanic Eastern island chain after the Vulcan ship that first discovered the planet, the supercontinent after the Bolian science vessel that did a preliminary study of the planet that inspired his survey, and the Western-most island Suut vahl Island. Which roughly translates from Denobulan into: "I don't like this island."

Personal Message from Vulcan

FROM: Vulcan/Emra Pico, Diplomatic Assistant
TO: USS XIR'TAN/Ensign Norvo Pico
SENT: Stardate 56685

Darling, hello! Hope you are safe aboard the Xir'tan. Things at the embassy are as exciting as ever here on Vulcan. We're entering their hottest season, so the final outdoor events are going on. We also just hosted a banquet for a Denobulan ambassador. Overall, I'm enjoying my time, I love my work and wouldn't trade it for worlds!

I remember you talked when you visited about being a little disappointed with your duties aboard a starship. But I remember you're letters about being assigned to Andoria, and you always enjoyed it there. Would you consider taking a position planet-side? I happen to have a few connections in the Trill Diplomatic Corps, and a friend told me they are preparing to replace an officer who is just proving too incompetent. They want the replacement set up in about 7 or 8 months. It's a Starfleet operations manager position, and it hasn't gone public yet. It's a Trill Embassy, so the Corps usually prefers to have Trill Officers serving there. And you should know I'm only giving you a heads up, just because you're family you won't get any special treatment. But I'm sure you're resume will be better than anyone elses!

I can't tell you the planet yet, it would be unprofessional until the officer is transferred out. But I'll be in contact with you again when the position opens with more details. Love you darling! Be well!

P.S. I've attached an audio file of yesterday's concert hosted by the Embassy, the singer Gamra Jiza was visiting from Trill to speak with the Vulcan Legislature. She was excellent, you should listen to it!

Ships Logs, USS Xir'tan: Stardate 56626

"Captain's log, stardate 56626.5. The repair work to the Benecia Colony weather grid is almost complete. I'm told there are just a few hours of final adjustments and tests today, and we'll be able to depart at 2100. Our next destination is Starbase 44, where we'll return to our cargo run to Cestus colony." - Captain Yiirel, Ready Room, Time Index 12:04:17

"Ensign Pico's log, stardate 56626. I have been serving as Acting Operations officer these past few days while we repair the Benecia Colony weather grid, as Lt. Zot has been on the surface coordinating operations. Ships systems are functioning at peak efficiency, I have been running the usual gambit of diagnostics on ships systems, and all appears well.." - Ensign Pico, Personal Quarters, Time Index 12:18:09

"Ensign Pico's personal log, supplemental. I am growing more bored each day, I feel like I need a change in my life. Perhaps I will request a transfer and try to find a Chief Operations officer position. Or serve aboard a ground station temporarily. Benecia has a nice Starfleet facility, though they also have practically nothing to do. I don't know what kind of change I am ready for in life, but I'm 23 and I did not sign up for the Trill Freight Commision, I enlisted in Starfleet." - Ensign Pico, Personal Quarters, Time Index 12:20:17

Ships Logs, USS Xir'tan: Stardate 56625

"Captain's log, stardate 56625.7. The repairs to Benecia Colony's weather grid are progressing nicely. I'm told they'll be completed by Wednesday night. Though I don't know how I'll break it to the ever hospitable Governor Koroko." - Captain Yiirel, Ready Room, Time Index 16:30:08

"First officers log, stardate 56625. While the Captain has been entertaining Governor Koloko from Benecia Colony, and performing the usual ceremonial niceties of visiting a colony -- my responsibility has been to see if there's anything else we can do for the colony. Aside from sending Lt. X to their University as a guest, as a favor for a friend, the colony does not seem to be in much need." - Commander Kirrjall, via Comm Badge, Time Index 18:19:42

"Chief Engineers Log, supplemental. What are we a Engineering Corps ship? Seems like our last few missions have been repair work heavy. No matter, I've been enjoying myself! The challenges are much better than making sure the ship remains at pristine ship shape as we deliver supplies from one colony to another, etc ad nauseum. But Benecia's weather grid repairs are going fine, I think there was a power surge in the Severe Weather Trace detection grid, which led to a failure in all of the back-up subroutines, which allowed stray signals from normal space to just wreak havoc on what the thing thought it was detecting. We've cleared up the software, and repairs to the hardware are almost complete. I'm reporting we should be done by Wednesday evening." - Lieutenant Commander T'Loris, Tricorder, Time Index 18:25:37

"Chief Medical Officer's Log, Stardate 56625.992. There have been no particularly noteworthy injuries or illnesses since my previous log. Ensign Pico's case of Thelusian flu appears to have cleared up before it could manifest symptoms in any other crew members, but I will continue to monitor to be certain." - Dr. Saran, Sickbay Office, Time Index 11:30:32

"Ensign Pico's personal log, supplemental. Manning Ops has been more interesting this week than Mission Ops, but I am still putting off thinking about whats been bothering me -- should I request a transfer? I signed up to 'explore strange new worlds' and all we ever do is shipping and maintenance. Sure, part of Starfleet is the custodialship of Federation space, but I just want to do something more exciting." - Ensign Pico, Personal Quarters, Time Index 11:56:12

OXYGEN/NEON ATMOSPHERE
MEAN SOLAR DISTANCE: 270,600,000 KM
SURFACE AREA: 44% Land, 56% Water
ROTATIONAL PERIOD: 22 hours 2 minutes

History
First charted by the starship USS Archon in late 2166, the Benecia colony was founded in the 2250s by the Ariolo. Federation members, the colony operated as a Federation protectorate. Starting with a colony of 2,400 Ariolo in a marshy valley, the colony began to prosper and invite more colonists from other worlds. As part of a trade agreement, an equatorial jungle was offered to the Xindi, inviting them to colonize it and operate the colony jointly with the Ariolo and the Federation. The Xindi accepted this offer, and in 2263 sent a colony vessel of 1,400 Xindi-Insectoids to found a city-structure there.

By the 2270s, the colony had a population of nearly 5,000 Ariolo, and 3,200 Xindi-Insectoids. A small Starfleet communications base was put on the planet in 2271, operated by a staff of 5 officers. Various reasons soon led to a immigration influx: in 2272, severe weather conditional shifts on Midos V led to a flight of nearly 10% of the colonies population, many of which settled on Benecia and consisted primarily of Rigelians. By the 2280s, the Xindi-Insectoid population had built and improved ties with the Ariolo, and a colony of Xindi-Aquatics were also invited to colonize a neighboring sea.

During the 23rd century, the Colony had sub-par medical care for a colony of its size. Faced by repeated funding and construction issues, a fully-capable hospital to replace the small-scale medical centers was not constructed until 2296.

By 2300, Benecia was still a slow growing colony compared to other Federation successes. The 2300 Federation Census marked it's population as approximately 175,000 - consisting of 90,000 Xindi-Insectoid; 35,000 Ariolo; 15,500 Xindi-Aquatic; 12,500 Rigelians and assorted others. The Benecian Art Gallery gained sector-wide fame as a tourist location during the 2310s.

The Starfleet base was remodeled in 2322 and expanded, adding a shuttlebay and now requiring a staff of 30. It's location relatively near the Talarian border soon became an issue during the Galen border conflicts of the 2350s, when it's security became a higher priority. Starfleet presence in the system increased exponentially, when once a Starship would pass through only a handful of times a year - suddenly dozens of starships visited a week, to monitor Talarian activity. Starfleet built a Subspace Relay Station in the system, and the Starfleet Corps of Engineers designed a large scientific research observatory on a moon in the system. As the Talarian conflict died down, Starfleet converted the observatory (long believed to be a listening post) into a fullscale monitoring station that kept tabs on the Talarian border.

During later 24th century, the Benecia colony had fairly little involvement in intergalactic affairs continuing growth as a small Federation colony, reaching a population of 500,000 in 2372. During the Dominion war, Benecia operated a Topaline mine in it's southern polar continent. Sizable quantities of Mizinite existed on the planet but went unmined, used by the Dominion but not particularly by Alpha Quadrant races. A small worry existed that the Dominion might plan to seize the planet for the ore existed, but Starfleet considered Benecia safely protected.

Yeah, my camping trip went well. Jirin almost lost a toe to a píroh snake, but it was fun. Mom has been bothering me non-stop to find a university to attend. So I'm taking some music classes at the Gheryzan Community College in a month, then I may transfer to a somewhere better. I've been working with Dad mainly, I don't wanna do construction but they're making me work. Mom says next time your in the Kalandra sector you should take some shore leave and stop by. Well, that's it I guess. Seeya.

Ships Logs, USS Xir'tan: Stardate 56557

"Captain's log, stardate 56557. The evidence of "Professor Kramer's" artifact manufacturing scheme is safely under lock and key with 24 hour guard in Science Lab 1. As for so called "Professor Kramer", I've been informed that his seat on the Federation Archeology Council has been suspended pending the investigation. As far as I'm concerned, his fate is in the hands of the Vulcan civilian courts now - we're just the vehicle for his delivery. But he is not the only passenger we're carrying, on a much happier note -- we are also delivering 4 incoming Starfleet cadets to Vulcan, who from there will be taken to the Academy on Earth. In my opinion, that silver lining puts a great end to a testing mission." - Captain Yiirel, Personal Quarters, Time Index 08:16:42

"First officers log, supplemental. The Professor Kramer character has been secured in our brig until we can hand him over to Vulcan security. Lt. Krorr is making sure he stays there, and keeping the evidence against him safe. I don't expect too much of a problem, his accomplices aren't dumb enough to attack a Starfleet ship this deep in Federation space, and I'm confident we don't have to worry about anyone of our crew. Commander T'Loris tells me he had a lot of fun upgrading the structural supports on Klendth while he was stalling for time, so alls well that ends well. But now I'm off to welcome our young passengers aboard for their brief journey, to the Academy. I'm thinking a tour of the ship, then dinner in the messhall." - Commander Kirrjall, Conference Room, Time Index 13:07:10

"Ensign Pico's personal log, stardate 56557. We have taken aboard several passengers, and are preparing to leave Klendth for Vulcan - a 9 lightyear journey, should only take a few days. The current shipwide mission briefing states we'll be there for 3 days before heading back to the Mariotian sector. I think I'll try to visit my Aunt Emra, an officer at the Trill Embassy there." - Ensign Pico, Personal Quarters, Time Index 14:35:02

"Captain's Log, stardate 56547. We have delivered Ramer and his archeology team, as well as the artifacts in Cargo Bay 2, to a science outpost on Klendth for study. Ahead of schedule, the Admiral has asked that we make sure all is well on the colony before departing. Call it a hunch, but ever since I met Professor Ramer I have just had the feeling something wasn't right. Here's hoping that hunch is wrong." - Captain Yiirel, Ready Room, Time Index 01:01:13

"First Officer's log, stardate 56547.4. In orbit of the Federation colony on Klendth. While the Captain, Commander T'Loris and Dr. Saran exchange niceties with the political establishment of colony, repairing any infrastructure we can and offering medical supplies and care, she has "unofficially" asked myself and Lt. Krorr to investigate these "archeologists" and the artifacts we just delivered. I trust the Captain's instinct, and instinct is very important to Ithanites... if she thinks somethings up, I bet it is too." - Commander Kirrjall, Personal Quarters, Time Index 09:45:32

"Chief Medical Officer's log, stardate 56547.44. Captain Yiirel has asked that I see to it that all the major clinics and hospitals on the planet are well supplied, that there are no major epidemics or anything of the sort on the planet - in essence, reassure the colonists that the Federation is fully interested in their well being. It is my assessment that their medical facilities are quite capable of seeking supplies on their own, and on average the population appears to be in standard health aside from a higher than average rate of Kamaraazite flu than usual for this time of year, though there is little I can do." - Dr. Saran, Sickbay Office, Time Index 10:33:51

"Chief Medical Officer's personal log, stardate 56547.44. What I did not mention in my official log, was that it is my belief that it is the Captain's intention that I assist in her efforts to "stall for time" as the saying goes. While lying goes against my beliefs as a Vulcan, and I do not see any evidence of the treachery the Captain believes to exist on the part of the Archeologists, I fully intend to follow my Captain's instructions." - Dr. Saran, Sickbay Office, Time Index 10:35:51

"Chief Engineer's log, stardate 56547. The Captain was a smart women to ask me to run a technological analysis of the planet. Scans show several of the buildings are not well equipped for the possibility of a seismic tremor. It could be days, weeks before the modifications my team is coming up with are fully put in place." - Lt. Commander T'Loris, PADD on the surface of Klendth, Time Index 14:20:37

"Ensign Pico's log, stardate 56547.8. With Lieutenants Zot and T'Jen in command of ships operations while the rest of the senior staff are working with the officials on the planet, I have been busy manning the Operations station, keeping track of our away teams check-ins and running diagnostics on ships systems making sure the ship is operating at full efficiency." - Ensign Pico, Personal Quarters, Time Index 20:12:07

"Ensign Pico's personal log, stardate 56547. My diagnostic duties are beginning to bore me. I mean, they've always bored me - but now I truely feel like I'm not contributing much to the efficiency of the ship. Exploration has always been a driving urge, need in my life - since childhood I wanted to see the stars. But I feel like I don't contribute much on this ship. Maybe I should request a transfer to a smaller ship, and hope I have more seniority there? Eh, it's probably just impatience. Within a few years, I'll be a Chief Operations officer I'm sure." - Ensign Pico, Personal Quarters, Time Index 20:15:41

OXYGEN/ARGON ATMOSPHERE
MEAN SOLAR DISTANCE: 284,200,000 KM
SURFACE AREA: 39% Land, 61% Water
ROTATIONAL PERIOD: 25 hours 14 minutes

History
Klendth III, also known as just "Klendth" is a Federation colony world and former Vulcan outpost. Founded in the late 19th century, it was here the Vulcan High Command set up the Loonkerian Outpost to study atmospheric conditions and test atmospheric modification apparatuses.

The destruction of a Andorian colony in the neighboring system during the Romulan wars left nearly 2,000 Andorian refugees homeless and without a high-warp capable ship. As part of a peace agreement between Andoria and Vulcan made during the war, the refugees were offered an island subcontinent near the Vulcan outpost to call their new home. By that point, the research being done on the planet was not considered classified or dangerous if the Andorian Imperial Guard had gotten ahold of it.

By the founding of the Federation in 2161, the planet had reached a population of 7,000 and less focus was put on the science outpost. As its commerce and trade grew, the population grew as well - and families and farmers began to move there. By the late 2180s, the population had jumped to nearly 80,000. In 2191, a major bioengineering breakthrough was made by a team led by Dr. Seran - the invention of the Universal Atmospheric Element Compensator, which is to this day considered the planets crowning contribution to Federation science.

Loonkerian City sprouted up around the Loonkerian Outpost, which is still operated to this day by Civilian Federation Scientists. The Andorian settlement across the bay from the city became known as Eketha'uul, a modification of the name of a resilient species of tree. By the 2230s population growth had allowed further suburbs of the two cities to form, as the area became less divided along racial lines. Further populous cities include Izh-skish Valley, New Austin, and Enuul Marsh - though all of the populated regions of the planet are in the same hemisphere.

By the 2340s the population had reached 300,000 though population growth slowed in the 2360s. A small orbital platform jointly run by the local civilian representatives and Starfleet was built in the 2310s, but was destroyed by the Jem'Hadar during the Dominion war. The building of a new orbital platform has been in the planning phase since 2376.

Government
As a Federation Colony, there is an elected Governor and Legislature - the Governor serving four year terms, and the legislature being elected on a rotational basis every three years. The Governors Office building is in Loonkerian City, but the Legislative Building is located in Eketha'uul.

Ships Logs, USS Xir'tan: Stardate 56515

"Chief Engineers Log, supplemental. It took most of the night, but using portable power supplies we were able to jump-start the power grid to the computer core. In the morning we'll be working on bringing the Engines back online to supply the ship with it's own power. What baffles me is how the enemy managed to shut down entire power grid with such little damage to the ship." - Lieutenant Commander T'Loris, Tricorder, Time Index 04:50:17

"Captain's Log, Stardate 56515.2. Our engineering teams worked all night over on the adrift Moroa, but they have been able to bring the computer core online. Commander Kirrjall is beaming aboard to find relevant clues, and hopefully find some answers to some burning questions: like where did the crew go, why there is no significant damage to the hull, and why were the computer systems shut down..." - Captain Yiirel, Personal Quarters, Time Index 05:12:43

"Chief Medical Officer's Log, Stardate 56515.229. I am transporting aboard the derelict ship with the away team in a few hours to check their medical bay for signs of injuries, and check if their Emergency Medical Hologram was activated. Unusual that a ship so abandoned seems like it was lost without much evidence of a struggle on the part of it's crew. Apart from those observations, I have been administering the Starfleet standard analeptic inoculation to protect from the mild Theta-radiation field in this system." - Dr. Saran, Sickbay Office, Time Index 05:30:44

"Tactical Officer's Log, Supplemental. I don't like this situation. It's too quiet. I'm expecting a firefight before we return to base. It doesn't make sense that ship was lost without a fight. It's as if they were all beamed away, but then how did the engines and computer shut off completely without damage? And their shields must have been up to combat the local theta-radiation that's affecting our scans. I'm staying on alert, that's for sure." - Lieutenant Krorr, Personal Quarters, 07:23:19

"Ensign Pico's personal log, Stardate 56515. Before leaving Starbase 44, we were able to get a datadump of letters and transmissions from friends and relatives. My friend Mordin got a letter from his sister on Benzar. I am waiting on a response from my brother, but it could be 2 weeks - Trill is almost on the other side of the Federation. I did get a letter from an old pal at my previous posting though, I'll get to watching and responding to that after this Moroa crisis is over." - Ensign Pico, Personal Quarters, Time Index 06:55:22

Personal Message to Trill Homeworld

FROM: USS XIR'TAN/Ensign Norvo Pico
TO: Trill Homeworld/Brinner Pico
SENT: Stardate 56500.8

Hey Brin, hope things back home are going alright. How are the houseplants? I hope mom didn't kill them all while you went camping. Hows the job hunt going? Don't worry, I'm sure you'll figure out what your interested in soon. And if Starfleet isn't your thing, and I know it's you've told me a thousand times it's not -- you could always attend a University offworld and get a real taste of culture. The University of Gildonn on Benzar has a really good computer programing... well, program; my Benzite friend Mordin was telling me about it because his little sister is studying there. Sure, I suppose you would need to wear a breathing apparatus like they do when they're off world. All I'm saying is, explore your options.

Well, life on the Xir'tan has been pretty boring lately, not much excitement to report about. Just came back from a G'raal diprenn Tepritt party going on in the Mess Hall. It's a Tiburonian holiday devoted to the celebration of Life, and you're supposed to celebrate by eating kilos of sugary desserts. I was pretty full after two pieces of Jonjah pie with Terran whipped cream. Tiburon must have a holiday a week, because it seems like there's always some Tiburon culture thing going on in the mess hall -- but I guess that's what you get when Tiburonians make up the most of any species on a ship. We have, I think 63 Tiburonians on a ship of 195. Most of the others are Vulcans, with an assortment of others. I'm one of only 3 Trill on board. None of us are joined, and I've only passed one of them in the corridor, never spoken to either.

But uh, we're en route to the Cestus III Colony to deliver supplies. We'll get there in about 4 hours, and be there for probably two days. Then I think we're off to Starbase 44 to pick up more supplies to deliver to some other colony. Like I said, it's been pretty boring. Most of my day consists of running diagnostics on the deflector or the communication array. Well I'm going to get going, say Hi to Mom and Dad for me!

END MSG.
